Day 24 - September 27, 2010
After a long and exhausting day at work I knew that I needed my yoga. Since I slacked yesterday today was going to be a double day. I headed towards the UWS studio just before 8 ... I really dislike the humidity in this studio... it is brutal! I got a spot in the room ensuring there is plenty of room. Of course, this old lady decided to squeeze in between me and the person next to me despite having other options. Then 2 minutes before class this pompous guy squeezes in front of me totaly blocking my view at the miror. I was annoyed! I asked him to move so I can see myself. He appologized and moved. ugh... some people are truly inconsiderate.
Class began, it was humid and hot beyond belief! Then I noticed an odd smell... of rust. It smelled like rust and I thought it was my towels or something. Oh no, it was the old lady next to me. Beyond bizzare. I looked at her feet and noticed they had RUST on them. WTF!?!?!? I spent the rest of class holding my breath, which made me hot and tired. Every time I tried to breathe the smell of rust would overpower and make me feel nausious. I laid down on the mat to get my balance. Then I smelled something else... alcohol! Did this woman go to the bar and walk on train tracks before coming to class. I could not catch my breath or take it any longer so with 20 minutes of class left I walked out. The instructor asked me what was wrong and tried to convince me to stay in the classroom. Sorry yoga lady... no way... not unless you want me to puke all over the smelly old lady!
After class I told the instructor that I couldnt breathe because the person next to me had an overpowering scent. She looks at me and tells me that I need to learn to block that out and push through it. All right then!
I could not wait for the second class where I would be able to focus on my practice. This is a 9:45 class which usually does not have many people attending. As a matter of fact it was about 10 people. Perfection, seemed like the humidity went away, or at the very least the new instructor knew how to manage it well. I absolutely loved this class... afterwards the stress of my day was melted and seemed irrelevant.
I finally made it home at midnight and slept like a baby!
Yes, that is what I had a problem with as well. You are in a hella humid room ingesting everyone's toxins. I used to go to a class with attractive 25 year olds who you could tell all went out drinking the night before and expected to sweat out the toxins. Well guess who was breathing them in. That's why I had to stop
ReplyDeleteSeriously... that was absolutely gross... i guess there is no way to not ingest some toxins... they are opening a new studio with a microbial floor which is supposed to not retain any of the toxins... sounds intriguing!
ReplyDeleteThat does sound gross. I wonder what it was....copper maybe?? Hopefully the good outweighs the bad. Just don't ignore your body. If you start to develop headaches or feel weak you should maybe stop for a while. Ummmm you will hate me for saying this but I wonder if the anti microbial floor will be worse. No doubt it uses chemicals to kill the microbes and can then start to breed highly resistant bacteria etc like what happened in hospitals. You breathe in chemicals instead of toxins. Just be careful. Like you, I loved Bikram but the bad outweighed the good for me. best of luck
